Bookbinding For Beginners

Learn the basic principles of bookbinding and the use of materials & simple hand tools through making a selection of pamphlet and multi-section case bindings using a variety of sewing structures, end papers and cover materials.

Students will make a minimun of 6 case bound books:

  1. Single section pamphlet with self ends and full paper cover
  2. Single section pamphlet with wraparound end papers and paper & cloth quarter case
  3. Single section pamphlet with decorative end papers and paper & cloth half case
  4. Multi Section rounded full cloth case binding with made end papers and made headband
  5. Multi Section rounded case binding
  6. Perfect Bound single pages with hard spine

This course is suitable both for those simply wishing to learn a new skill or for students working towards City & Guilds Level 1 Certificate in Design & Craft  (7716-89 Bookbinding) qualification. C&G students will also be given guidance on how to make and present the samples, journals and other evidence required for subsequent assessment.

No previous experience is required.
